Determining if a development or joint venture partner is appropriate to work with is a challenge that rarely ends even after a collaboration begins. However, it is possible to screen in high-potential partnering opportunities and to screen out many non-viable ones, saving countless hours of effort and greatly reducing the sunk costs that inevitably result from "bad dates" or worse, "failed marriages."

Perception Partners works with clients to ask the right questions, in order to reveal who is already developing technologies we require. We then screen across social, science and business networks to source the personalities that best align with the innovation opportunities and intellectual property requirements. These might include indicators ranging from network position to IP position to strategic position to market position. We then systematically and collaboratively grade potential partners based on these metrics and thereafter expertly review the underlying data in the context of defined needs.

Our recommendations are shared in succinct prospect pipelines with clear rationales. This enables clients to understand our thinking, challenge assumptions and then "own" the results to be shared with management, stakeholders and sometimes even prospects.

Perception Partners has developed a systematic approach to scouting for technologies and patents. We use high-throughput screening techniques that interactively mine global text databases in science, technology and law.

Scouting always begins with a structured problem definition. We collaborate to determine what will (and won't) work, how we'll spot a "winner" and what a success is worth. We develop a range of terms to characterize our ideal assets. We then establish hundreds of "micro-searches" to correlate textual terms with statistical trends to screen in e.g., appropriate properties and parameters, while screening out e.g., known competitors or unacceptable solutions. Viable options resulting from this approach are collected, graded and discussed with clients in successive conversations, taking great care to provide streamlined lists of opportunities with clear evidence of the success criteria defined at the onset of the engagement.

If we are patent scouting, we also ensure that our legal partners can easily assess the criteria they need for decision making. This may include claims charting, workaround lists, prior art references, encumbrances or other evidence required in patent acquisition decision-making.
